Hobie 16s
The Ras al Hamra Boat Club has a very active cat sailing community. We have a great fleet of 12 Hobie 16 catamarans, with which we hold monthly races, training sessions, fun sailing and even camping trips. The Hobie 16 is a fast and exiting boat, that can offer some spectacular sailing, especially when the wind comes up!
Below you will find useful information on how to get started with the Hobies at RAHBC.

The "Cat-ticket"
Club Cats are available to any member of RAHRC with a valid "Cat Helms ticket". To get a cat ticket you must successfully complete the requirements set out on the Cat Ticket Checklist.
For anyone going out in a cat (club or private): note and follow the Sailing Competencies Rules and Cat Checklist. |
Training
Course instructors: Matthaeus & Joe
The course covers rigging, safety on land and water, sailing jargon, care for and handling of equipment, dry practice, and of course the real thing – out on the water. Conditions for learning at RAHRC are almost ideal with warm and clear waters. To join the course, you should have previous sailing experience on either windsurfer or a dinghy. Our previous trainer, Dave Clark, wrote a good "cat: sailing basics" guide. He also published a "List of sailing terms: English (and Dutch) as they appear in the guide. Some good information on "how to rig and sail a cat" is available from the old "Prindle Guide" (the cats we used to sail before we had Hobies). |

Fastest "Round the Island" run
This is "THE BIG ONE". Fahal island is 4 km away from our beach. Start from the beach, sail around the island and get back to beach (a trip of about 10.7 km). Fastest time is recorded for eternity.
Fastest in any boat: "The Blue Ribbon". Fastest in an Optimist: "The Golden Duck". Both awards are fiercely coveted. Have a go yourself! Other events
There are many different events organised from time to time, such as the Hobie Open, the Commodore's Cup, the Four Points Race and the Annual Regatta happening every spring.
