RAHBC Hobie Open Championship 2013
The annual Hobie Open Championship, held on 20 and 21 September, was a waiting game for a long time. With no wind at all on Friday, the sailors killed time with a Kayak competition and banana boat racing.
Saturday didn't look much better, but at the beginning of the afternoon a little bit of wind came up in the bay. Therefore the OOD's decided to lay a short course inside the bay, but by the time this was done, the wind had died again. After some drifting, swimming and rafting up, the wind came back, and we were finally able to have some races.
Fifteen boats, a reach start and a short course: plenty of elements for some good excitement on the water. And this proved to be true. There was some incredibly close racing, and small mistakes could cost sailors two or three places. Needless to say, the starts were rather chaotic at times, and the OOD's had their hands full with many individual and general recalls.
At the time of the fifth race, the wind had picked up into a nice breeze, but as the sun was setting, it was time to come in, have a drink and compare results. The father and daughter team of Giles and Eve Brinsley were unstoppable and won the title for the third time in a row, followed by Christophe Doublet / Susanne Solberg and Stijn Delauré / Bojana Pavlovic in second and third place.
The trophy for best new lady sailor was won by Lizzy Jolley and Jorrit Scholten was awarded best young sailor.
