RAHRC Regatta - The Highlight of the Sailing Year! Sponsored by VOLVO Buses and Trucks. “Never take it for granted what we experience; others wait a lifetime to live what we have.” Joe Bildstein. Wow, what a weekend that was! Thanks to the wind, all the participants from RAHBC, those returning from afar and the usual seriously hard organisation from some special people, this year’s regatta again did what it said on the tin: “On the beach, on the water, we joined the party!! This was all made possible by excellent participation and sponsorship from VOLVO BUSES AND TRUCKS (the main sponsors), OIG African and Eastern and RAHRC. Around 200 participants made up 11 teams, and sailors raced on Hobies continually for 2 days in a series of pursuit races. These results along with 4 laser races, 2 round the island races and the Captains race made up the final overall result. Separate sailing events included windsurfing and approx. 20 sailors under 16 in toppers. It was great to see new team initiatives growing and old teams reinvented, switched round and/or injected with new and budding talent creating great competition on the water. The competition was extremely close and the leader changed throughout the 2 days making for an exciting weekend, every team with their successes and challenges! Innovative new beach activities like Rasjenga and Beach Bowling were added to the traditional volleyball, petanque, and sand castle building competition for fun for all the family, keeping people entertained on the beach during the day. Evening dinner, drinks, DJ, band and dancing kept the party going. When asking the Team Captains for feedback, I couldn’t put it better myself: From the Aeolus Team “Aeolus The Mighty was gracious to us and granted us plenty of his joyful fruit; wind on that weekend, against all odds. It was a great day to feel alive and enjoy wind, waves, speed, people, teamwork, music, food, and meet "old" friends who returned to worship the God of Wind. Some of the returnees never lost their touch with managing the wind and showed us again how to do it (Tony, Klaus....). It was great to see good and fair competition, on the water and on the beach and nice to see people helping each other when help was needed. Never take it for granted what we experience, others wait a lifetime to live what we have." From the Flying 16s Team "Amazing wind, great sailing, teamwork and sportsmanship! It was especially promising to see more F16s YOUNG SAILORS on the water doing so well and inspiring each other in toppers, windsurfers and hobies. We all –children and adults - loved the new beach games and different new events too. A special thanks to OOD Stephen Martin, I really do not know how the regatta could happen without Stephen who not only worked all weekend, but pulled the whole regatta organisation together along with a new committee and all below, getting the job done as always so efficiently and selflessly. This was a huge, wonderfully nostalgic event made unique by the presence of a mixture of friends old and new. Saturday evening was particularly special! We MUST keep the REGATTA TRADITIONS alive forever - especially fancy dress and maple bacon popcorn !!!" From the Kamakazes Team "A great highlight of the sailing year for sure! I was struck to see so many ‘Classics’ present, i.e. former Club members who come back just to take part in this event. It shows how important this event has become beyond current Club membership alone.” One friendly Classic whose 17th Regatta it was, mentioned that this was the second best due to the excellent wind conditions we had! The organization of the event sadly had to deal with the unavoidable and unfortunate absence of some key members including its Commodore, and it was good to see that a number of people stepped up to fill the gaps (especially Stephen Martin, Craig McMeekin, Sarah Salt and Jenna, Joe Bildstein,). A massive sigh of sympathy from the crowd celebrating Dave Clark and Victoria's huge contribution over many years to the health of the sailing community at RAHRC and commiserating their departure this April. Unfortunately we had one medical treatment case due to a dangerous condition in a storage area. Apart from that, I am not aware of any sailing or non-sailing incidents, as we want it to be! The only other real blot on the event was the Orpic oil spill affecting the boats. The cleaning efforts by all teams in the following week no doubt were helpful to strengthen team spirit and cohesion!” From the Float-a-Tender Team “The regatta was excellent in terms of wind and sailing and we particularly enjoyed the dinner and the band at the end.” On behalf of the Surfin’ Turtles/Tunas/Classics Team “ We need to give up work so we can do this full time!” All in all an excellent weekend of fun. What are we doing next weekend? ........................................................................ Thank you to: All local and returning participants for joining this event. A perfect, 12-18 knot easterly all weekend provided excellent conditions for a steep learning curve for some, and blew away the cobwebs for others. 8 'C3' races were held over 2 days testing stamina and concentration. With 15 teams entered, there was no need for a pre-qualification round and it was straight into racing with no practice runs. Teams consisted of sailors from ages 10 to 65. On day 1, Rob and Michiel dominated the fleet with superior boat speed and a very fast crew according to eagle-eyed OOD observation. The first start saw the whole fleet shy of the line but this improved as the weekend continued. Teams had the chance to improve their skills and confidence in a safe environment and were competitively twin wiring at speed or just learning how to survive the gusts. There were several capsizes from almost all of the fleet, some caused by errors and others pushing the competition to the limits. A leaky boat stopped 1 team, a painful capsize halted another and over the weekend, race participation went from 15 to 7 teams. Stronger winds are certainly less forgiving! Errors such as dropping the main sheet, leaving the sheets cleated during the tack, weight in the wrong place, lack of fleet awareness, not watching the gusts, etc. were all punished! Day 2 saw some initially flukey, patchy, oscilating winds in race 1 but it settled to something constant with some occasional, beautiful gusts. There was also more opportunity for tactical manoeuvres, both up and down wind due to the longer course making racing interesting. The first 3 boats rotated places. The rest of the fleet also enjoyed changing positions avoiding processional sailing. Starts were more competitive with some individual recalls. Teams were collecting bruises but warming up, gaining confidence and making wonderful sailing memories. All in all it was a fantastic 2 days of really fun, eventful sailing, which inspired everyone to sail more often and boost the sailing activities. THESE EVENTS ARE NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS. Thanks for: Event organization - Rob Niewenhuijs OOD and results- , Dave Clark, Roel Berendsen, Steven Martin and John Amos Day 1 photos - Roel Berendsen (Sorry we didn't get any on day 2) Maintenance - Sailors boat checks and repairs (as taught on Helm CC we are all responsible) and maintenance and 'spares courier' team Hugh Thomson and Chris Smith, Dave Clark Thanks to ALL SAILORS FOR PARTICIPATING and making it such a great event. Finally CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS, Rob, Michiel and Joelle - well done!! To all sailors,

The round the Island record on a Hobie 16, has been held for 10 years by Tony and Paul Henri Van Thiel since 2007 (25.04) and Dave Clark and Victoria Grainger previously since 2003 (25.27) so it is a great achievement for the son and father team Matthaeus (a 16 year old helm and recently qualified dinghy and multi-hull sailing instructor) and Luca Walcher (father and crew) to have finally broken the record on 13th August 2017. There time beach to beach, recorded by Boat Safety Officer, Said, shaved 11 seconds off the previous time.
The new record is 24 minutes and 53 seconds.
Congratulations on now holding the Blue Ribbon Trophy!
Matthaeus and his family have also sailed at international events, are members of the Flying 16s at RAHSC and Matthaeus helps with the Hobie training at the club. Watch this young, fast, talent and continue to help him on his sailing path.
The 2016-2017 team race season was not so windy. Unfortunately we could only race on 4 dates.
The new race season will hopefully be better again. The first race of season 2017-2018 is scheduled on Friday 6th October 2017.

See you on the water
